Gary Talks Physical Media: Troma's Graduation Day Blu Ray

In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary dives headfirst into the wonderfully grimy world of Troma Entertainment with its new Tromatic Special Edition Blu-ray release of Graduation Day, the 1981 slasher directed by Herb Freed.

School is almost out, but somebody isn’t making it to graduation.

Graduation Day follows a high school track team whose members begin meeting increasingly deadly fates following the sudden death of one of their teammates. As graduation approaches and the body count rises, someone is stalking the students one by one, turning what should be a celebration into a full-blown slasher nightmare.

Arriving during the explosion of early-1980s slasher movies, Graduation Day combines the familiar ingredients of the genre with plenty of eccentric characters, gruesome kills and that unmistakable low-budget energy that has helped the film develop a cult following over the decades.

Gary revisits Graduation Day to see how this slice of 1980s slasher cinema holds up today. Is there more going on here than another post-Halloween body-count movie? How effective are the kills and mystery? Does the movie deliver the sleazy, strange charm that cult horror fans are looking for? And most importantly, is Graduation Day actually any good?

Then Gary digs into Troma’s new Tromatic Special Edition Blu-ray, examining the video and audio presentation, special features, packaging and overall value of the release for horror and physical media collectors.

Troma occupies a wonderfully strange corner of the physical media world, where cult movies, exploitation cinema, independent filmmaking and outright cinematic lunacy frequently collide. That makes Graduation Day exactly the kind of release that can be fun to discover through physical media, whether you're a longtime slasher fanatic or have never encountered the movie before.

Does Graduation Day deserve to graduate into the upper class of early-’80s slashers, or should this one have been held back?

And does Troma’s new Blu-ray deserve a place in your horror collection?
