Gary Talks Physical Media: The Back To The Future 88mph Cut

On November 5, 1955, Dr. Emmett Brown slipped while hanging a clock in his bathroom, hit his head on the sink, and came up with the idea for the FLUX CAPACITOR, the invention that makes time travel possible!

And since today is November 5, 2026, I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate one of the most important dates in movie history than with a very special episode of GARY TALKS PHYSICAL MEDIA!

This time, we're doing something a little different.

Instead of reviewing a traditional studio Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD release, I'm taking a look at an unofficial fan edit of one of the most beloved movie trilogies of all time:

BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE 88 MPH CUT!

That's right! Somebody has taken all THREE Back to the Future movies, edited them together into ONE continuous cinematic adventure, and even incorporated deleted scenes into the experience!

We're talking about Back to the Future (1985), Back to the Future Part II (1989), and Back to the Future Part III (1990), all combined into a single epic journey through the past, present, and future!

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, produced by Steven Spielberg, and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale, the original trilogy remains one of the most beloved franchises in movie history.

Starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as the eccentric Dr. Emmett Brown, these movies introduced audiences to the time-traveling DeLorean, Hill Valley, the McFly family, Biff Tannen, and one of the most brilliantly interconnected stories ever brought to the big screen.

But what happens when you take three movies that were originally released over five years and reassemble them into one continuous narrative?

Does the story flow more naturally?

Do the transitions between films work?

How do the newly incorporated deleted scenes affect the pacing and storytelling?

And perhaps most importantly, does watching the entire trilogy as one movie offer a genuinely different experience?

That's what we're exploring in this special episode!

One of the things I've always loved about Back to the Future is how meticulously the three movies connect. Characters, locations, jokes, and seemingly insignificant details introduced in one film become important in another.

It's a trilogy practically begging to be explored as one enormous time-travel adventure.

And that's what makes this particular fan edit such an intriguing experiment!

Of course, THE 88 MPH CUT is an unofficial fan-made edit, not an authorized Universal Pictures release. The Blu-ray featured in this episode is a custom physical-media presentation of that fan project.

But for fans who have watched the original trilogy countless times, it's fascinating to see how creative editing can offer a different perspective on movies we already know and love.

And as someone who has spent much of my career producing and editing television, I find projects like this especially interesting. Editing isn't simply about shortening a movie. It's about rhythm, pacing, structure, and finding new ways to tell a story.

NOW I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
